Roof Shingles and colors

September 5, 2016 by Kyle Lyons Leave a Comment

Is it time to replace your roof? What roof shingles are the most popular in your area? We will search our database and show you, what colors and brands are the most popular in areas like Louisville, Kentucky, Clarksville, Jeffersonville, Charlestown and New Albany Indiana.

Quote from Peter Drucker

Of course, everyone has his or her own individual preference. But, why not see what everyone is choosing and maybe even find the color that will fit you and your families taste.

Louisville, Kentucky Roof Shingles of choice

Louisville, Kentucky is broken down into many smaller sections. Being a large city its very common, we could go down to the zip code but, for the sake of you being able to look over this in a few minutes versus hours of reading we will look at Louisville as a whole.

Over the past year, Owens Corning Onyx Black has been the color of choice for our Louisville, Kentucky customers.

onyx black roof shingles

I know what you are thinking. Black roof shingles, “don’t they make your home hotter and absorb more heat?” In short yes, they do absorb more heat than your lighter color options. But, the amount of heat they absorb is so minimal and effects your home ever so slightly, you would never tell the difference. And just look how pretty they are on a nice brick home!

Southern Indiana Roofing Shingles of choice

We decided to break down southern Indiana a little bit more. This way we could show all of the “favorite” colors instead of just having a few to choose from.

Clarksville

The favorite for Clarksville comes in as an Owens Corning Oakridge Estate Grey. With 100’s of homes over the years in the Clarksville area choosing this roof color, they must be on to something!

Estate grey roof shingles

Jeffersonville

Jeffersonville, close enough to Clarksville. Separated only by a road, decided to go with a more natural tone for their roof color. The dominant roof shingle in Jeffersonville has been the Owens Corning Oakridge Driftwood.

New Albany

New Albany took a play out of the playbook of both Clarksville and Louisville there has been an almost exact demand for both the Onyx Black and Estate Grey.

It might be the proximity to the other areas or maybe the colors are just great for everyone!

Charlestown

Owens Corning Oakridge Brownwood is the color of the summer for the Charlestown area. With the early spring storms Charlestown home owners decided Brownwood would be the color that would work best for their homes!

Brownwood roof shingles

Now you may be wondering if there are any other brands of shingles, it seems like it is all Owens Corning. Well, easily explained as a preferred Contractor of Owens Corning roofing Shingles it is our first choice and after showing customers the reliability, of not only the Owens Corning products but also the customer service if there does happen to be an issue.

Owens Corning

However, There are other great brands and beautiful colors in the world of roofing to choose from. Even through The Lyons Roofing Company and we can say that even though it may be a different brand, the blacks, browns and greys are still the most popular choice for roof shingles.

Ice and Water Shield

September 2, 2016 by Kyle Lyons Leave a Comment

Ice and Water shield, looks similar to felt. But, provides so much more for your home. Have you ever seen a roof installation and wondered what the local roofing contractor was installing? It rolls out like roofing felt, but what is that they are peeling off the back?

Ice and water shield was one of the greatest inventions for your local roofing contractor. Manufactured with a rubberized asphalt mixture, ice and water shield provides one of the best layers of protection a home could ask for.

Where to use ice and water shield?

Ice and Water Shield can and should be used in all climates and locations in the U.S. Depending on where you live in the country you will have different requirements for use.

Southern climates

In the south you do not have as much ice and snow to battle, most roofing contractors will use the product in areas that are prone to leaks. Valleys, chimneys, skylights and any in some cases walls as an extra layer of flashing

Northern climates

Sorry northerners, you need more Ice and Water Shield to protect your home. The snow and ice build-up that so commonly happens in your area needs to be stopped from entering into your home. In addition to valleys, chimneys, skylights and walls. Ice and Water Shield should be installed at the base of your roof. This provides an extra layer of protection in areas that ice and snow commonly build up.

How does Ice and Water work?

With the rubberized make up of Ice and Water shield, it provides a seal around every nail that penetrates the material. Think of a nail puncturing a tire, yes the nail goes in but immediately the rubber in the tire forms around the nail and in some cases, you will never have a leak.

That is why most reputable roofing contractors will explain the importance of ice and water shield and make sure it is installed properly and in the right locations.

We hope that regardless of who replaces your roof, ensure that this product is in installed in the areas needed depending on the climate.

Louisville what else can we say?

August 31, 2016 by Kyle Lyons Leave a Comment

Louisville, Kentucky is one of the biggest small cities you can find. Home of the fastest two minutes in sports. Great bourbon and let’s not forget about Thunder over Louisville.

I mean come on, what else could you ask for?!

Well, for a roofing contractor in Louisville we are provided with some of the best clients a roofing company could ask for. Southern charm in a northern climate and lifestyle. Oh and let’s not forget, we like the other things that come along with Louisville.

Kentucky Derby

Louisville roofing contractor

Now where else could you put this but first. The Kentucky Derby, the fastest two minutes in sports. Running strong since 1875, I mean come on, what other sporting event has that kind of streak? So a little about the derby, the derby fields three year olds for a mile and a quarter race. The excitement leading up to derby day is something of amazement. If you are not from this area, you are in for a real treat. Come up two weeks early and you get to be amazed by one of the largest firework displays in the world, don’t forget the amazing food and bourbon!

Thunder Over Louisville

THunder over louisville

Kicking off the Kentucky Derby season, two weeks before the big race, we have one of the largest fireworks display in the world and the largest in North America. I mean how else would we do it? Get there early, people come from all over the country and start camping out at five and six am for the festivities. Thunder day has festivities all day long, the air show starts early in the afternoon and well, let’s just say there is everything from your normal hamburgers and hotdogs to deep fried snickers. Did I mention we like to eat and drink around here?

Great Bourbon

bourbon

Where should I start? Kentucky is Bourbon; Louisville is Kentucky. Ok, that should explain it!

What makes it so great for roofing contractors in Louisville?

Louisville has some of the best southern charm around. Yes, it sits right on the north south border of the old days, but still has the old southern feel and architecture. Which as a roofing contractor, we love architecture! Check out the Conrad-Caldwell house if you are in the area. One of the many beautiful Victorian era homes around.

We love our customers and the many things that Louisville offers. Louisville chooses us as a family business. Relocating to the area in 1999 to help with a family farm in Southern Indiana, we slowly built our business throughout the years and we fell in love.

We did not only fall in love with the Kentucky Derby, Thunder Over Louisville or the great bourbon or pizza. But, the people, there willing us to embrace our company and help us grow. Thank you to all of our customers in the Louisville, Kentucky area. We would not be the company we are today, without you!

Roofing and Homeowners Insurance

August 24, 2016 by Kyle Lyons Leave a Comment

Ever wondered about roofing and homeowners insurance, what an insurance company is talking about when it comes to Replacement cost or Actual cost value? Or, do you even know what kind of coverage you have on your home and roof?

roofing and homeowners insurance

Most people don’t take the time to understand or even know they may have a massive gap in their roofing and homeowners Insurance coverage.

Lets say you live in the Midwest, you have a massive storm event once every 3 years and it results in a new roof at an average cost of over $14,000 dollars each replacement. Does it sound like a good investment for your insurance company to take in somewhere between $300 and $1000 a year, then have to pay that entire $42,000 out?

Someone has to take a hit on the roofing and homeowner’s insurance coverage.

So what exactly is Actual Cash Value and Replacement Cost, which will better protect you as a homeowner? Only you can decide which will be the best option for you and your family. They can both be viable options, but, one can cost your more than the other.

  • What is Actual Cash Value

Actual cash value is the amount equal to the replacement cost minus depreciation of a damaged or stolen property at the time of the loss. It is the actual value, for which the property could be sold, which is always less than what it would cost to replace it.

  • What is Replacement Cost

A replacement cost is the cost to replace an asset of a company at the same or equal value. The asset to be replaced could be building, investment securities, accounts receivable or liens. The replacement cost can change, depending on changes in market value of the asset and any other costs required to prepare the asset for use. Accountants use depreciation to expense the cost of the asset over its useful life.

So which coverage should you choose

What coverage is best for you and your home? That is really for you to decide. For most Replacement Cost is the best coverage for roofing and homeowners insurance. There is normally a substantial cost increase going with this type of coverage. Actual Cash Value can be a viable option as well; The only difference between replacement cost and actual cash value is a deduction for depreciation. However, both are based on the cost today to replace the damaged property with new property.

Can you really blame the insurance companies?

There is an old saying “Profit isn’t a dirty word”. Yes, we as homeowners want to protect ourselves. But, an insurance company wants to protect themselves as well, after all if we didn’t have insurance companies. We would have to keep a lot more money on hand in times of emergency.

Contact your Insurance agent or local roofing company if you have any questions about your roofing and homeowners insurance policy. It is easier to ask people that do it for a living than try to figure it out yourself.
