Roofing Contractor and Technology

September 14, 2016 by Kyle Lyons Leave a Comment

Technology changes on a daily basis and it is no exception for your local roofing contractor. How do roofing contractors stay current in an ever-changing world, or should they just stay with the same old pen and paper way of doing things? We have all seen a roofing contractor pull up to our home, proceed to pull out his handy notebook and measure your roof. They come down and scribble down a total price then hand it to you and then they are on their way.

roofing contractor technology

This by no means, means they are an untrustworthy roofing contractor.

Contractors like any other company can be slow to new technology, The Lyons Roofing Company included. So how did we change this and how will the technology available help you as a customer?

Start with the basics. Every time you call into The Lyons Roofing Company you are put into our database. Now I know, you ask who doesn’t have a database for their customers? Well in the roofing industry a lot of roofing contractors are behind times, sticking with their memory and cabinets upon cabinets of paperwork.

If other roofing contractors are like the Lyons Roofing Company with over 15,000 roofs replaced in last 10 years. That means tons of headaches for the roofing contractor and the customer.

Customer databases have been a major time saver for the Lyons Roofing Company and for our customers when they need information about their roof.

Remote measurement is another timesaver for roofing contractors, the technology continues to grow and companies like EagleView dominate the market for both roofing contractors and insurance companies alike.

There are some other options out there in programs, which have proven very accurate as well. The Lyons Roofing Company we use the later, a program for your PC. After multiple test roofs, we found to be as accurate as EagleView.

computer technology

This has given us an advantage with most jobs being pre-measured. With the average roof taking 30 mins to measure; The Lyons Roofing Company team members will spend more time inspecting your roof than measuring it.

Technology has its advantages and dis-advantages. But, with the roofing and industry sectors continuing to grow, customers get a better product faster and at a better price.

What to do as a customer and roofing contractor

For the roofing contractors out there that are behind the times. It may work now but chances are, it wont in the future so get a computer and get with the times.

For the homeowners. Don’t worry if your roofing contractor is using pen and paper, this is construction, we are scared of change. New technology in building and computers is always a risk for us and our customers. Tried and true has always been our motto!

How Can We Improve Customer service

September 9, 2016 by Kyle Lyons Leave a Comment

Recently we received some feedback from a customer about our customer service follow up. They asked as nice and professional as it was to have a survey company follow up with our customers, was it that helpful? Even on top of the personalized thank you cards, we send out to our customers asking for feedback.

Customer service representative

So why do we go beyond the norm asking for feedback? Simple, customers have driven our company to success over the years, this is our way of finding out, what else we can do for our customers and to say thank you for the business.

Customer Service Surveys

We have collaborated with the guild quality company for our surveys in order to get the best feedback possible from our customers. With basic questions about how our customers feel about how knowledgeable we are, to how we communicate gives us the feedback we need in order to grow and better serve our customers.

Guild Quality offers so much more in a survey, much more than we asked of our customers before and with easy online and phone calls it makes it easier than ever for our customers to give us feedback in areas like:

  • Professional and Organized
  • Installation Crew
  • Quality of Materials
  • Quality of Workmanship
  • Clean and Safe
  • Work Done Right
  • Problem Resolution
  • Schedule
  • Value received

Customer Service

And so much more, It has given The Lyons Roofing Company a whole new look into our customer service that we couldn’t do without them.

Thank you cards

The personalized thank you cards were something we started years ago. Just ways to say thank you, then they blossomed into a short survey (Before Guild Quality) then transformed again into a thank you and areas for improvement. Prepaid for our customers to quickly jot a note down and send it back our way, good or bad.

Our business thrives on customer service and it is something we strive to improve on everyday. If you are a previous customer of The Lyons Roofing Company thank you for your feedback if you have provided it. If you have not had a chance and you know of a way to improve our services please let us know any way possible.

Thank you again to all of our Louisville and Southern Indiana Customers.

Ice and Water Shield

September 2, 2016 by Kyle Lyons Leave a Comment

Ice and Water shield, looks similar to felt. But, provides so much more for your home. Have you ever seen a roof installation and wondered what the local roofing contractor was installing? It rolls out like roofing felt, but what is that they are peeling off the back?

Ice and water shield was one of the greatest inventions for your local roofing contractor. Manufactured with a rubberized asphalt mixture, ice and water shield provides one of the best layers of protection a home could ask for.

Where to use ice and water shield?

Ice and Water Shield can and should be used in all climates and locations in the U.S. Depending on where you live in the country you will have different requirements for use.

Southern climates

In the south you do not have as much ice and snow to battle, most roofing contractors will use the product in areas that are prone to leaks. Valleys, chimneys, skylights and any in some cases walls as an extra layer of flashing

Northern climates

Sorry northerners, you need more Ice and Water Shield to protect your home. The snow and ice build-up that so commonly happens in your area needs to be stopped from entering into your home. In addition to valleys, chimneys, skylights and walls. Ice and Water Shield should be installed at the base of your roof. This provides an extra layer of protection in areas that ice and snow commonly build up.

How does Ice and Water work?

With the rubberized make up of Ice and Water shield, it provides a seal around every nail that penetrates the material. Think of a nail puncturing a tire, yes the nail goes in but immediately the rubber in the tire forms around the nail and in some cases, you will never have a leak.

That is why most reputable roofing contractors will explain the importance of ice and water shield and make sure it is installed properly and in the right locations.

We hope that regardless of who replaces your roof, ensure that this product is in installed in the areas needed depending on the climate.

Roofing and Homeowners Insurance

August 24, 2016 by Kyle Lyons Leave a Comment

Ever wondered about roofing and homeowners insurance, what an insurance company is talking about when it comes to Replacement cost or Actual cost value? Or, do you even know what kind of coverage you have on your home and roof?

roofing and homeowners insurance

Most people don’t take the time to understand or even know they may have a massive gap in their roofing and homeowners Insurance coverage.

Lets say you live in the Midwest, you have a massive storm event once every 3 years and it results in a new roof at an average cost of over $14,000 dollars each replacement. Does it sound like a good investment for your insurance company to take in somewhere between $300 and $1000 a year, then have to pay that entire $42,000 out?

Someone has to take a hit on the roofing and homeowner’s insurance coverage.

So what exactly is Actual Cash Value and Replacement Cost, which will better protect you as a homeowner? Only you can decide which will be the best option for you and your family. They can both be viable options, but, one can cost your more than the other.

  • What is Actual Cash Value

Actual cash value is the amount equal to the replacement cost minus depreciation of a damaged or stolen property at the time of the loss. It is the actual value, for which the property could be sold, which is always less than what it would cost to replace it.

  • What is Replacement Cost

A replacement cost is the cost to replace an asset of a company at the same or equal value. The asset to be replaced could be building, investment securities, accounts receivable or liens. The replacement cost can change, depending on changes in market value of the asset and any other costs required to prepare the asset for use. Accountants use depreciation to expense the cost of the asset over its useful life.

So which coverage should you choose

What coverage is best for you and your home? That is really for you to decide. For most Replacement Cost is the best coverage for roofing and homeowners insurance. There is normally a substantial cost increase going with this type of coverage. Actual Cash Value can be a viable option as well; The only difference between replacement cost and actual cash value is a deduction for depreciation. However, both are based on the cost today to replace the damaged property with new property.

Can you really blame the insurance companies?

There is an old saying “Profit isn’t a dirty word”. Yes, we as homeowners want to protect ourselves. But, an insurance company wants to protect themselves as well, after all if we didn’t have insurance companies. We would have to keep a lot more money on hand in times of emergency.

Contact your Insurance agent or local roofing company if you have any questions about your roofing and homeowners insurance policy. It is easier to ask people that do it for a living than try to figure it out yourself.

Chimney Leak

August 17, 2016 by Kyle Lyons Leave a Comment

Rain pouring into your living room or den can be an unwanted experience? So what if you have a fireplace in your living area and you get the unsightly brown spots or water dripping on the floor or running down after every rain.

Chimneys

Chimneys and fireplaces are beautiful and relaxing. If you are fortunate enough to have one in your living room then you can relax with a good book and listen to the crackle of a warm fire on a cold winter night. Or even better, maybe you have one in your bedroom and can set the mood with your spouse and a nice glass of wine!

chimney-flashing

The provide dimension to the outside of your home and give the classic America feel to most homes. But, if flashing is installed improperly or sealant begins to break down you can find yourself using the wine glasses to catch water and that romantic mood can quickly turn into a nightmare!

Problems with chimneys

What can cause these leaks? First, your flashing could be the biggest problem. So what if you have a brick fireplace, then check the sealant along your counter flashing. If it is broken or cracked, that is more than likely your problem. If you have siding on your home, check the corners of the chimney and flashing, the flashing wraps around the corner and any sealant can break down over time.

chimney brick

Some lesser known problems can include sealing of your brick. Over time your brick can become porous and create a sponge effect when it rains. Regardless of how good your chimneys flashing job is, it could still leak!

If your chimney is any more than four foot wide you more than likely need to have a saddle installed to divert the water around each side of the chimney instead of directly in the back.

Check with your local professional roofing contractor and have an inspection done if you think you have any problems. It is better to make sure al of these problems are addressed during replacement but can be easily addressed if needed after your roof has been replaced.
